MONSEY: Open Letter From Congressman Mike Lawler

Republican Congressman Mike Lawler (NY17) who proudly represents the Jewish community in Monsey & Rockland County issued a strong statement in support for Senator Bill Weber

Rockland County, NYCongressman Mike Lawler’s official statement is below.
  • I was deeply disturbed to read the highly misleading letter to the editor published recently by former Senator Elijah Rechlin- Melnick. In the letter, Rechlin-Melnick attempted to distance himself from the controversial monitor-with-veto-power bill that he authored in collaboration with Commissioner Betty Rosa. At the time and in the years since I have made it abundantly clear that this bill does nothing to address the real funding issues facing the East Ramapo School District and have strongly advocated for altering the state school aid formula in addition to forcing the state to take on the responsibility of mandated services. Elijah could have supported numerous bills that l introduced that would have provided a genuine solution by transferring the cost of transportation from the district to the state, but instead chose to scapegoat the local school board, refusing to co-sponsor my proposed fixes.
  • Since then, I have left the NYS Assembly and successfully run for Congress, but I am grateful to Senator Bill Weber for picking up where I left off. When Albany refused to hold a Foundation Aid Hearing in the Hudson Valley, Senator Weber stepped up and hosted his own forum where I had the opportunity to speak. He has also introduced legislation to fund the East Ramapo Central School District until the Foundation Aid study is completed. Senator Weber has my full confidence and support in the upcoming November election.
  • As for Elijah Rechlin-Melnick, I would strongly advise him not to use my name as a crutch for his flailing campaign. The mess he helped create by neglecting to fix the problem when he had the opportunity is now beyond repair. It’s too little, too late, Elijah.
Signed, Congressman Mike Lawler.
