U.K.’s Labour Party Set For Landslide Victory, Exit Polls Project

Exit polls suggest U.K.’s opposition Labour Party is on course to win back a huge parliamentary majority in the general election, after 14 years, unseating the incumbent Conservatives.

Millions of people across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland voted for their local representatives in the 650-member House of Commons on Thursday. 

The final results will be posted on Friday morning. In the U.K., voting is done by pencil to paper; no voting machines are used, and all ballot papers are counted manually.

The Sky News exit poll projects that Labour, headed by Keir Starmer is set to win the majority with 410 seats, and Conservatives, headed by Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, will win 131. Liberal Democrats, led by Ed Davey, win 61 seats, Reform UK headed by Nigel Farage has 13. Scottish National Party, led by John Swinney, has 10. Plaid Cymru 4, Green 2, All others 19.

To form a majority government in the Commons, a party needs to win at least 326 seats, which Labour would have with these projected results.

If accurate, this would bring Labour to power and gain its second-largest majority since former Prime Minister Tony Blair’s 179-seat majority in 1997. A nationwide result will likely be declared early Friday, with Keir Starmer, leader of center-left Labour, expected to become the country’s next prime minister.
