Century-Old Russian Shul Attacked By Islamic Terrorists in Dagestan

More than 15 were killed on Sunday – including police officers, security guards, and several civilians – in a large-scale multi-scene terrorist attack in Russia’s southern republic of Dagestan, according to officials. 

Authorities said the terrorists opened fire on a Shul and lehavdil, two Orthodox churches, and a police post in Derbent and Makhachkala, two cities in the region.

Dagestan’s Interior Ministry said a group of terrorists shot at a Shul and lehavdil, a church in the city of Derbent, located on the Caspian Sea. Both caught fire, according to state media.

Almost simultaneously, reports appeared about an attack on a church and a traffic police post in Makhachkala, the capital of Dagestan.

The Derbent Synagogue, also known as Kele-Numaz, was opened in 1914 and was restored to its original glory in 2009 under the supervision of the Federation of Jewish Communities of Russia (FJCR).

The Chabad Rabbi and his family were safe and were not in the city. All Yiddishe community members appear to be accounted for. The Shul burned down r”l, and tragically, two security guards and a police officer were murdered by the terrorists when they were trying to protect the Shul.

Reportedly, the Shul was empty when it was attacked, Baruch Hashem, there are no known Yidden among the victims, according to the Israeli Foreign Ministry.

The authorities announced a counter-terrorist operation in the region. The Anti-Terrorist Committee claimed five terrorists were eliminated.

In October, a pro-Hamas mob of locals attacked Yidden en route from Eretz Yisroel. In April, Russian Security forces thwarted a terror attack on a Moscow Shul. Authorities found a ready-made IED.

In March, a terror attack on a concert hall in Moscow, orchestrated by ISIS-K, killed over 140 Russians and set fire to the building. In March, Four ISIS-K terrorists killed 145 people at a Moscow concert hall. Since the attack, Russian police have been on high alert.
