Rockland County, NY – Frum candidate and Askun R’ Aron Wieder who won the Democratic primary and nomination for the 97th Assembly Seat, which includes Monsey, Spring Valley, New Square (Skver), Chestnut Ridge, Kaser, New Hempstead in Ramapo, and the village of Pomona, Rockland County.
Wieder will face off against incumbent Assemblyman John McGowan in the general election today.
Several Askunim and Monsey activists involved with Wieder’s Assembly campaign have reached out to FrumNews.com to clarify misunderstandings, ‘rumors’ and Weider’s opinion on this controversial bill which will be decided in todays election on the voting ballots.
Community leaders shared and confirmed with FrumNews.com that Aron Wieder strongly opposes and is 100% against ‘Prop 1’ and that Wieder urges the Jewish community to vote NO on Prop 1.
“NY’s Prop 1 if passed, will jeopardize both the physical and spiritual safety of the Jewish community. This proposal is reckless and dangerous, it will cause unimaginable permanent damage to Rockland County and the greater New York Jewish and Frum community, every resident is urged to vote NO on it.”
Joining Wieder, Jewish community leaders from across the state have been warning New York’s frum communities of the dangers on ‘Proposal 1’ if passed.
Aron Wieder, is a Belz Chossid and a graduate of Yeshivas Machzikei Hadas, he is currently a Rockland County legislator, which he has been serving since 2011, representing Spring Valley and Monsey, serving as chair of the Budget & Finance Committee.
In March, Aron announced he was running at the Democratic Committee meeting in the Town of Orangetown, NY.
NY Assembly’s 97th District has been reshaped to include major Frum communities, in Rockland County.
If elected, Aron Wieder would be NY’s sixth Frum assemblymember, alongside Frum assemblyman Sam Berger of Kew Gardens Hills Queens, Ari Brown of the 5 Towns, Simcha Eichenstein of Boro Park and Flatbush, and David Weprin, of Richmond Hill, Queens. As well as candidate Kalman Yeger, who is running unopposed.
Another Frum candidate Joey Cohen Saban, is running for NYS Assembly in South Brooklyn in the general election today. If elected that would make it 7 frum candidates in the New York State Assembly.
This would give New York’s Frum communities a bigger voice on important issues, including Yeshivas, Public Safety and Eretz Yisroel.

In New York, where Democrats hold a super majority, running as a Democrat for Assembly raises your platform and flipping a district gives an even bigger voice. Last November, Rabbi Avi Schnall from Agudah ran as a Democrat for the NJ Assembly and beat the incumbent Republican, flipping the Lakewood NJ district. He was then appointed to the important Education, State and Local Government committees that affect the Lakewood Yeshivas and the wider community.
