The Israel Defence Forces struck Hamas terror targets Monday night in eastern Rafah, dubbed as the final battle of the nearly seven months war in Gaza.

The Israeli War Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, has promised for months that it would enter the Hamas-controlled city, but kept delaying a full-scale offensive.

On Monday night, the Israeli war cabinet unanimously voted that the IDF should enter Rafah.

“The War Cabinet unanimously decided that Israel should continue the operation in Rafah to exert military pressure on Hamas in order to promote the release of our hostages and the other goals of the war,” the Prime Minister’s Office said.

At the same time, the IDF said it is “conducting targeted strikes against Hamas terror targets in eastern Rafah in southern Gaza.”

Netanyahu and President Joe Biden had a phone call this morning, ahead of the Rafah operation. According to the White House readout of the call, “Biden updated the Prime Minister on [his] efforts to secure a hostage deal, including through ongoing talks today in Doha, Qatar. The Prime Minister agreed to ensure the Kerem Shalom crossing is open for humanitarian assistance for those in need. The President reiterated his clear position on Rafah.”

Also, on Monday morning, Hamas terrorists ‘claimed’ it agreed to a ceasefire deal proposed by the Egyptian government, The Israeli Prime Minister’s office said in a statement that, “although the Hamas terrorists proposal is far from Israel’s necessary requirements, Israel will send a delegation of working mediators to exhaust the possibility of reaching an agreement under conditions that are acceptable to Israel.”
