Austria’s Directorate of State Security and Intelligence (DSN) revealed on Thursday that a major weapons cache had been uncovered, as part of an international probe into a global terrorist network linked to Hamas.
The weapon cache is believed to be intended for terror attacks against Israeli and Jewish sites across Europe. It was discovered in a suitcase in a rented storage room in Vienna and contained five handguns and 10 magazines.
The Hamas terror organization denied involvement in the planned attack, but European intelligence officials believe the discovery exposes a sophisticated network preparing coordinated assaults in multiple countries.
The investigation was linked to the October 1 arrest of three Hamas-affiliated suspects in Berlin, Germany.
A 39-year-old unidentified British citizen, who allegedly had “close ties to the weapons cache,” was arrested in London on Monday. The UK’s National Crime Agency confirmed to EuroNews that a suspect was arrested in central London by specialist officers from the National Extradition Unit.
The investigations and seizures by the DSN represent another significant success in the fight against illegal arms trafficking and international terrorism.
“This current case demonstrates once again that the DSN has excellent international networks and takes decisive action against all forms of extremism,” Austrian Interior Minister Gerhard Karner said in a statement. “The mission is clear: zero tolerance for terrorists.”
“The dedicated action and meticulous investigative work of the DSN have made a decisive contribution to this successful weapons find,” State Secretary Jörg Leichtfried added. “A strong sign of their professionalism and their commitment to the safety of our fellow citizens.”
