DEMOCRATS ABANDON ISRAEL: Top House Dem Place Hold On Israel Munitions

Rep. Gregory Meeks of Queens, New York — who represents heavily Jewish communities of Far Rockaway and Kew Gardens and is the top Democrat on the House Foreign Affairs Committee — pushed to block a proposed sale of $2.8 billion in heavy weaponry to Israel. Using the tired claim that they would not be used in line with U.S. and international law.

While individual congressional committee members don’t have the power to stop an arms sale, they can place a hold on a deal to obtain more information (or concessions). 

The sale of 40,000 2,000-pound bombs, Rep. Minks claims, “raises grave, unresolved concerns about how these munitions could be used in densely populated areas of Gaza and Lebanon.” Adding that he will not clear this sale at this time. Because the Trump administration “has not provided sufficient assurances that these weapons will be used by the Netanyahu government in accordance with U.S. law and with appropriate protections for civilians.”

In this case, Secretary of State Marco Rubio can bypass the normal congressional review process by declaring the deal an urgent national security interest, as he did last year. 

Three years since the Hamas terror attacks on October 7th, and the wars of self-defense that followed, Israel is seeking to reload its munitions, including 2,000 lb bombs that were stopped by the Biden administration. The reasoning used by the Biden administration was that they may have been used for “mass casualties” strikes, even as Israel has surgically targeted Hamas terrorists and has avoided civilians at all costs.

However, the effects of this action may matter little, but the main worrying narrative is that congressional Democrats are voting outright against Israel and the Jewish communities that they serve. This would have been unthinkable just five years ago.
