House Speaker Mike Johnson Visits The Skeverer Rebbe in New Square

On Sunday, Rep. Mike Johnson, Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, was warmly welcomed in New Square as he paid a visit to the Skverer Rebbe on Tuesday. Speaker Johnson was accompanied by Rep. Mike Lawler of Rockland and New Square Askunim. 

The visit comes as Congressman Lawler is up for reelection in November, and Speaker Johnson made this trip to support Congressman Lawler and his reelection campaign. In 2022, he flipped the district to red — with a mere 1,820 votes, taking the seat from longtime Congressman Sean Patrick Maloney, and helping give the House Majority to the Republicans. 

Then, Speaker Kevin McCarthy visited Jewish communities to shore up support for Lawler in the Frum community.

The Rockland visit included a campaign breakfast event in New City, NY, hosted by Doug Katz and Mike Lehner, later, with a VIP event in Monsey organized by Sander Gerber and Shlomo Werdiger.

The Speaker then visited New Square to meet the Skverer Rebbe Shlit”a and Community Askunim. Following the meeting, Johnson addressed a large crowd in the large tent near The Skvere Rebbe’s home.

Later in the day, Speaker Johnson had a meeting with Catskill, NY, Congressman Marc Molinaro, Activist Chaskel Bennett from Agudah, Askunim Abraham Rosenberg and Abe Rutner of the Sullivan County Jewish Community Council and discussed with the house speaker safety issues and security concerns for the Jewish community in Upstate New York.

Veteran Klal Askan Chaskel Bennett told Speaker Johnson, “The Orthodox community is very diverse, but there are certain core issues that unite us across the board, and that’s religious freedom and school choice. Our grandparents came to these American shores because they wanted to rebuild after the Holocaust. This country has always valued religion and those who practice it. We increasingly see alarming challenges to those freedoms and we are committed to protecting our ability to live our lives as authentic Torah Jews. We thank the Speaker for his unwavering commitment to these principles.”
