White Plains, NY — Westchester County, with its vibrant and historic Jewish community of approximately 120,000, is the latest battleground among Democrats as candidates fight over their views during the ongoing war in Gaza.
Since the Milchama broke out in Eretz Yisroel, after Hamas terrorists attacked and massacred 1200 Yidden and kidnapped hundreds on Simchas Torah, the public sentiment in the US has been mostly positive for Eretz Yisroel, especially in Congress.
But the self-named far-left “Squad” in Congress has been bashing Israel ever since the war began. One “Squad” member, Rep. Jamal Bowman, has been attacking Israel since he won his congressional race in 2020 in a primary upset.
Since then, he has led the charge, attacking Eretz Yisroel at every turn, especially after the massacre on Simchas Torah by Hamas Terrorists. Almost immediately supporting a resolution calling for a “ceasefire” and dismissed the horrors committed by Hamas terrorists as “lies” and “propaganda.” He never apologized for denying aspects of the Oct. 7 massacre. He eventually accepted their veracity, after a November U.N. report was released.
Enter George Latimer, the popular Westchester County Executive, who is Challenging Rep. Bowman for the 16th Congressional District. This district covers the southern half of Westchester County, including Mount Vernon, White Plains, New Rochelle, and Yonkers, as well as a small portion of the Bronx.
The war in Eretz Yisroel is a major flashpoint. Latimer paints himself as a common-sense Democrat who denounces the anti-American extremism that Bowman pushes.
On Eretz Yisroel, Latimer says he stands “with Israel and supports its rights of existence, stability, self-defense, and peace. (Though he says he supports a “two-state solution”). His campaign site states, “in Congress, Latimer will continue to fight worldwide against racism, anti-semitism and all other forms of hate.”
The campaign and anti-Semitism from Bowman have united the Jewish community to make a massive push for Latimer. A number of Jewish Democratic groups are also pushing Latimer.
Polling from the Democratic Majority for Israel of 400 registered voters in NY’s 16th District, showed that 52% support Latimer. Bowman received 35%. Indeed, Latimer’s strong support of 40% exceeds Bowman’s total support (35%). Among those who vote most often in primaries (3 or 4 of the last 4), Latimer is even stronger, leading Bowman by 56% to 35%.

Rep. Bowman, together with other “Squad” members has gone out of his way to attack Eretz Yisroel each day since October 7th, as summarized by the American Jewish Congress (edited for brevity):
- Rep. Bowman has been associated with antisemites and anti-Israel activists, and has embraced inflammatory rhetoric, going so far as to accuse Israel of “genocide.”
- Rep. Bowman offered high praise to Norman Finkelstein, a longtime anti-Israel activist who had celebrated Hamas terrorism in Israel. Bowman introduced Finkelstein at a panel discussion on the Israel-Hamas war, stating that he was “a bit starstruck” because he “watched him all the time on YouTube.” Finkelstein is a profoundly anti-Semetic figure, as his 2000 book “The Holocaust Industry” accused Jews of exploiting the memory of the Nazis to promote Israel.
- In October 2023, Bowman voted against the congressional bipartisan resolution H. Res. 771 supporting Israel. The resolution stated that the House of Representatives “stands with Israel as it defends itself against the barbaric war launched by Hamas and other terrorists” and “reaffirms the United States’ commitment to Israel’s security,” and it was passed with overwhelming bipartisan support.
- Rep. Bowman accused Israel of “genocide “and “ethnic cleansing” in Gaza, after Israel’s response to Hamas following the October 7 terror attack.
- In July 2023, Bowman joined other members of the “Squad” in voting against a congressional resolution highlighting that “the State of Israel is not a racist or apartheid state,” that Congress rejects “all forms of antisemitism and xenophobia,” and that “the United States will always be a staunch partner and supporter of Israel.”
