London — British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak announced the date for national elections: set for July 4. The elections will determine who governs the U.K., as polling shows his conservative government looks likely to lose power after 14 years.

“Now is the moment for Britain to choose its future,” Sunak said in an surprise announcement, many expected a fall election. He chose a good day of economic news, hoping to remind wavering voters of one relative success of his time in office.

Sunak’s center-right party has seen its support dwindle steadily. In the past two years, it has struggled to overcome a series of crises, including an economic slump, ethics scandals and a revolving door of prime ministers.

The Labor Party is strongly favored to defeat Sunak’s party. Labor leader Keir Starmer claims his party would bring stability.

The Conservative Prime Minister stressed his credentials as the leader who saved millions of jobs with support payments during the COVID-19 pandemic and took credit for the economy under control. He said the election would be about “how and who you trust to turn that foundation into a secure future.”

The announcement came the same day official figures showed inflation in the U.K. had fallen to 2.3%—its lowest level in nearly three years—due to big declines in domestic bills.

“Today marks a major moment for the economy, with inflation back to normal,” Sunak said. “Brighter days are ahead, but only if we stick to the plan to improve economic security and opportunity for everyone.”

Due to an influx of “new immigrants” many far-left (pro-crime) candidates of the Labor Party won in the local May 2 elections, including in London and Manchester. The Conservatives Party which advocates for public safety – law and order are hoping to make a comeback.
