Donald Trump has reportedly made his decision on his vice presidential pick and is expected to announce who it will be at the Republican National Convention later this afternoon as the vice president is formally nominated.
Trump is believed to have narrowed his list to three candidates: Ohio Sen. JD Vance, North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum and Florida Sen. Marco Rubio.
All come with different benefits and vulnerabilities.
The Three Frontrunner:
Senator JD Vance
Seen as the hardliner frontrunner, Ohio Senator JD Vance is an energetic candidate choice. He is seen as an “America First” candidate. He supports tariffs on trade and opposes U.S. intervention in foreign conflicts, particularly the war between Russia and Ukraine.
Governor Doug Burgum
North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum is one of the frontrunners, Burgum would bring business acumen and a steady hand, though Trump has noted his signing of a highly restrictive abortion law could be a drawback.
Senator Marco Rubio
Florida Senator Rubio is seen in the party as a respected policy voice, and his background is that of a son of Cuban immigrants and a Spanish speaker. He could help Trump appeal to Latino voters and Florida voters.

Wild Card:
These candidates are speculated but very unlikely to be nominated:
Gov. Glenn Youngkin
Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin is seen as a centrist Republican, and picking him would be seen as trying to win Virginia and independents.
Nikki Haley
Former South Carolina Governor and Ambassador to the UN, Nikkie Haley, ran against Trump in the 2024 primary and has traded attacks with the Nominee. Picking Haley would be seen as healing the presidential primary.
Tulsi Gabbard
Former Hawaii Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard sought the Democratic nomination in 2020, is seen as a candidate who flipped to the Republicans in the past 3 years. Picking Gabbard would be a wild but calculated choice for the Trump ticket
