The remnants of Hurricane Beryl have spawned suspected tornadoes and caused damage on its path toward the Northeast after causing damage and leaving millions in the Carribean, Mexico, and Houston without power. Nearly 2 million homes and businesses around Houston lacked electricity on Tuesday,

When Beryl made landfall, it was far less powerful than the Category 5 behemoth that tore a deadly path through parts of Mexico and the Caribbean. Hurricane Beryl hit Texas on Monday as a Category 1 hurricane, according to The National Weather Service.

Beryl, the earliest storm to develop into a Category 5 in the Atlantic, has been blamed for at least seven U.S. deaths and at least 11 in the Caribbean.

On Wednesday, parts of Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine were under a flood watch. By early Wednesday, it was a post-tropical cyclone centered in northeastern Indiana with maximum sustained winds of 30 mph (45 kph).

The National Weather Service said that the tristate area remains under storm watch:

“Beryl continues to make its trek through the Lower Great Lakes and toward the Northeast this afternoon as a Post-Tropical Cyclone. Thunderstorms forming both ahead of an approaching cold front nearing the Mid-Atlantic and along/north of a warm front stretching from northern New York State to New England will be capable of containing intense rainfall rates, which is likely to produce numerous areas of flash flooding.

“A Moderate Risk (level 3/4) of Excessive Rainfall remains in effect from northern New York to northern Vermont and New Hampshire, where the greatest chances for widespread flash flooding exists. Additionally, tornadoes and damaging winds are possible across the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic States until late tonight. Residents and visitors in these regions are reminded to stay weather aware and have multiple ways to receive warnings.”
