Manhattan, NY — A unique art installation, the Portal, has been unveiled in front of New York’s Flatiron Building in Manhattan this week, forging a real-time connection between the bustling streets of New York and the vibrant city of Dublin, Ireland.

The art installation, dubbed the “The Portal,” connects the two cities. On the New York side, it is positioned at the iconic Flatiron Plaza, at Broadway, Fifth Avenue, and 23rd Street, in the heart of Manhattan. On the Dublin side, it is positioned facing the capital’s main street, O’Connell Street. The Portals offer a real-time, unfiltered livestream 24/7, “inviting people of different cultures to meet above borders and differences.”

The project is the brainchild of artist Benediktas Gylys, who installed the first two portals in Lithuania and Poland in 2021.

“Portals are an invitation to meet people above borders and differences and to experience our world as it really is—united and one. The livestream provides a window between distant locations, allowing people to meet outside of their social circles and cultures, transcend geographical boundaries, and embrace the beauty of global interconnectedness,” Gylys said.

“It is a delight to celebrate the opening of this captivating installation and see two vibrant global cities connected in real-time,” said NYC DOT Commissioner Ydanis Rodriguez. “We encourage New Yorkers and tourists alike to visit The Portal and experience this unique shared encounter across the Atlantic. We are grateful to the City of Dublin, the Flatiron NoMad Partnership, and the Simons Foundation for bringing this vision to fruition.”
