Rockland — U.S. House Speaker Mike Johnson will join Rep. Mike Lawler for a visit to New Square, where they will have a special meeting with the Skverer Rebbe on Sunday, 18 Kislev.
Askanim told Rockland Daily that the visit highlights the warm relationship between the Skver community and Congressman Lawler, as well as the continued national attention on issues important to Rockland County.
After the event in New Square, Speaker Johnson will join Rep. Lawler for other local events in Rockland County. Organizers say the meeting will allow local officials to discuss key priorities and ongoing collaboration with federal leadership.
This comes as Rep. Lawler, as well as all congressmembers, are up for election in 2026. Lawler’s house seat is considered a swing seat.
In 2024, the same Rep. Johnson and Lawler made a similar joint visit to New Square, as FrumNews.com reported at the time. Since then, the political landscape has changed; now Rep. Johnson and Republicans enjoy a trifecta in Washington, controlling the House, Senate and presidency.
“The Orthodox community is very diverse, but there are certain core issues that unite us across the board, and that’s religious freedom and school choice,” Veteran Klal Askan Chaskel Bennett told Speaker Johnson during the visit in 2024. “Our grandparents came to these American shores because they wanted to rebuild after the Holocaust. This country has always valued religion and those who practice it. We increasingly see alarming challenges to those freedoms, and we are committed to protecting our ability to live our lives as authentic Torah Jews. We thank the Speaker for his unwavering commitment to these principles.”
