Last month, City Hall announced that the New York City Housing Authority will begin accepting new Section 8 applications for the first time in 15 years.

The wait is over. Applications for Section 8 in New York City are now open. The application window already opened at midnight on Monday, June 3rd and will last until TONIGHT: 11:59 p.m. Sunday, June 9th.

The online portal lists a number of rules and tidbits:

  • The application for Section 8 takes an average of 20 minutes. If you don’t finish in one session, your information will not be saved, and you’ll have to start from the beginning.
  • Upon submission of your application, a reference number will be displayed on the confirmation page (it will also be emailed to you for your records).
  • The site notes that submitting an application does not guarantee the application will be placed on the waitlist or that you will receive an offer of housing (as only 200,000 applicants will get approved) .
  • All applications submitted are subject to NYC’s review and approval. Duplicate applications will be rejected, so submit only one.
  • Additionally, there is no fee to apply. “No fee or payment should be made to anyone in connection with processing your application,” the NYC spokesperson said.
  • The Section 8 waitlist is expected to be established by August 1, 2024. The NYCHA will begin to call applicants off the waitlist then. The waitlist status will not be available before August 1, 2024.
