Iranian state media reported that a helicopter carrying the Iranian president crashed in the Iranian province of East Azerbaijan on Sunday.
The President, who was elected in 2021, was returning from inaugurating a dam in northwest Iran near Azerbaijan.
The helicopter reportedly crashed near the border city of Jolfa, likely due to rainy and foggy weather. Rescue crews that were sent (with rescue dogs, drones, and rescue teams) were hampered by poor weather conditions.
Iranian officials said that the president and foreign minister were “at risk following the helicopter crash.”
Reuters reported that Red Crescent workers reached the site, but no official reports have been released on their condition or if he is still alive.
Turkey has also deployed night vision helicopters to aid in the search for Iran’s missing president.
A senior administration official said that while U.S. President Joe Biden was briefed by aides on the Iran crash. The U.S. has not learned much more than what is being reported publicly by Iranian state media.
The Iranian Revolutionary Guard brought in anti-riot police to Iran’s large cities, in case the president’s death would be announced in the morning.
This is a breaking story and will be updated with more information as it becomes available.
