New York and New Jersey is expected to have its first heat wave of the year this week. It could begin as early as Sunday as temperatures could reach 100° degrees.
The upcoming heat wave is likely to be one of the most intense from over the past several years. Peak heating is expected on Tuesday, when many locations in the tri-state area to reach the century mark. Heat index will be through the roof, reaching over 100° degrees. The forecasted in Central Park would be the highest temp since 2021.
The Tri-state area will have high humidity and even higher ‘feels like’ temperatures this week through Wednesday. Heavy showers and thunderstorms will begin Thursday with isolated flooding in the New York Metro area, as the heat wave finishes.
- A Yellow Alert is in place from Sunday through Wednesday due to excessive heat and humidity, with temperatures as high as 90-100°.
- A Heat Watch Advisory is in place for New York and New Jersey from Sunday morning through Wednesday evening, with ‘feel like’ temperatures as high as 110°.
“With record-high temperatures across the state and potential flash flooding afterwards, New Yorkers must be vigilant and listen to cell phone alerts from the National Weather Service,” Governor Kathy Hochul said. “During this time, be sure to check on your family, friends and neighbors, and stay hydrated as the temperatures continue to rise.”
The heat wave will be part of a broader heat wave in the East Coast and will continue over the next couple of days. It will become particularly intense on Tuesday.
