This afternoon, Mayor Eric Adams visited the waterfront at 39th Street and 2nd Avenue, right near Boro Park, where a large offshore wind port is coming to the South Brooklyn Marine Terminal in Sunset Park.
South Brooklyn Marine Terminal is a 73-acre site that will serve as the facility where wind power projects will be assembled and manufactured.
Mayor Adams and Governor Hochul announced the start of this project, which will be the largest offshore wind port in the country. This port will advance the progress toward bringing more clean energy to New York and will eventually support 9,000 megawatts of wind power by 2035. The port will also be the operations hub for Empire Wind 1, another wind project, which will deliver enough megawatts to power 500,000 New York homes.
“Today, we are powering up New York’s clean energy economy and creating more than 1,000 union jobs for working-class New Yorkers as we break ground on the largest dedicated offshore wind port in the nation at the South Brooklyn Marine Terminal,” said Mayor Adams.
“We are taking a large step forward in our commitment to build a sustainable future and foster economic growth,” Governor Hochul said in a statement. “With the groundbreaking of South Brooklyn Marine Terminal, New York is fueling the redevelopment of the Brooklyn waterfront, bringing important investments to our communities, creating good-paying jobs, and building the model for the offshore wind industry that the rest of the nation can follow.”
