On Motzei Shabbos, a concerning event occurred when reportedly “hostile elements” attempted to seize control of the communication network on an El Al flight traveling from Phuket, Thailand, to Ben Gurion Airport in Israel, according to Israeli public broadcaster Kann Reshet Bet.
During the incident, instructions were given to the crew that were different from their set route, raising concerns that someone was trying to damage the plane or lead it to dangerous areas, maybe even to conduct a kidnapping.
Details are still emerging from the incident; reports suggest that the perpetrators sought to manipulate the plane’s trajectory, possibly trying to divert the aircraft from its intended course. However, the flight crew quickly detected irregularities and thwarted the threat.
While the exact motives behind the attempted takeover remain unclear, authorities are actively investigating the incident to ascertain responsibility and prevent similar threats in the future. The aircraft was flying in airspace known to be frequented by Houthi terrorists.
According to a statement by El Al to Ynet, “Flights over Somalia have suffered disruptions in their radio connections and have been warned about this by the local government, and that “the disruptions are not aimed at [El Al] planes and it is not a security incident — the disruption did not affect the continuation of the flight.”
The flight continued without further incident and reached Ben Gurion International Airport safely.
