New York and New Jersey is expected to have its third heat wave of the year this week. It could begin as early as Sunday as temperatures could reach the low and mid-90s.

The upcoming heat wave is likely to be one of the most intense of the year. Peak heating is expected on Tuesday, when many locations in New Jersey may reach the century mark. Heat indices will be through the roof, reaching as high as 110. The forecasted high of 97 in Central Park would be the highest temp since 2021.

The Tri-state area will have high humidity and even higher ‘feels like’ temperatures this week through Wednesday. Heavy showers and thunderstorms today and tomorrow may result in isolated flooding in the New York Metro area.

  • A Yellow Alert is in place from Monday through Wednesday due to excessive heat and humidity, with temperatures as high as 90-100°.
  • A Heat Advisory is in place for most of the area from Sunday morning through Tuesday evening, with ‘feel like’ temperatures as high as 105°.
  • For most parts of New Jersey, there is an Excessive Heat Watch in place from Monday morning through Wednesday evening with ‘feel like’ temps as high as 110.

“With record-high temperatures across the state and potential flash flooding in the Downstate regions, New Yorkers must be vigilant and listen to cell phone alerts from the National Weather Service,” Governor Kathy Hochul said. “During this time, be sure to check on your family, friends and neighbors, and stay hydrated as the temperatures continue to rise.”

The heat wave will be part of a broader heat wave from the Plains to the East Coast and will continue over the next couple of days. It will become particularly intense for many of the urban centers in the Southeast, Ohio Valley, and along the East Coast.

Forecast highs range from the low to mid-90s in New England west through the interior Northeast and into portions of the Great Lakes, the mid-90s to low 100s from the Mid-Atlantic/Southeast west through the Middle/Lower Mississippi Valley, and the low to mid-100s over portions of the central and southern Plains.
