Boro Park Councilman Kalman Yeger is running to fill the seat of Flatbush/Midwood Assemblywoman Helene Weinstein, who announced she will retire from the 41st District of the New York Assembly in March.
Frum Councilman Kalman Yeger has represented Boro Park and part of Flatbush since 2017, when David Greenfield tapped him to replace him in the City Council. Yeger is term-limited through 2025.
Before getting elected to the New York City Council, Kalman Yeger was a member of Flatbush Community Board 14 for 18 years.
In March, Assemblywoman Helene Weinstein announced her resignation after serving in NY’s legislature for nearly 44 years. She is the current chair of the powerful Ways and Means committee. “I have decided to retire at the end of this term. I want to thank all of my constituents throughout the years for placing their confidence in me… It has been the greatest honor to serve as an Assemblymember,” she said in a statement.
Askun Chaskel Bennet congratulated Weinstein on her career, saying, “I have had the honor of working closely with Assemblywoman Weinstein on behalf of our growing community for well over twenty-five years. Few, if any, have served their constituents with more respect, effectiveness, and sensitivity… I congratulate her on an extraordinary career and thank her for her friendship, guidance, and service to our community.”
Assemblywoman Weinstein quickly announced her endorsement of Yeger, putting him as the frontrunner of the new race.
Councilman Yerger is the second Frum candidate to announce his candidacy for NY Assembly seats, after Monsey Askun Aron Wieder, who announced his campaign the week before for Rockland County.
If elected, Yeger would be NY’s fourth Frum assemblymember, alongside Frum assemblyman Sam Berger of Kew Gardens Hills, Eric “Ari” Brown of the 5 Towns, and Simcha Eichenstein of Boro Park and Flatbush (NYS District 48), giving New York’s Frum communities a bigger voice on important issues, including Yeshivas, Public Safety and Eretz Yisroel.
Kalman is running against Adam Dweck in the Democratic primary, which is today, June 25.
